Kielnhofer ist seit 2000 als freischaffender Künstler im Bereich Malerei,
Bildhauerei, Fotografie, Multimedia und in der Konzeptkunst tätig. Er
hat schon früh über Technik und Design den Zugang zur bildnerischen
Kunst erschlossen.

Die zeitlichen Wächter
Der umsichtige und vielseitige
Medien- und Lichtkünstler Manfred Kielnhofer bestätigt mit seinen
zeitlosen Installationen „Die Wächter der Zeit“, dass die Menschheit seit
jeher aus historischen und mystischen Gründen Beschützer hat. Nur sind
die Menschen manchmal die größte Gefahr für sich. Kielnhofer fasst dieses
Vorlange nach Geborgenheit in jeder Phase gut auf und zeigt durch seine
Werke sehr viel Verständnis für die aktuellen, wie historischen
Befindlichkeiten seiner Umgebung. Mit gekonnten Licht- und
unterschiedlichen Materialkombinationen bestechen seine Arbeiten.

The Time Guards.
With his timeless installations “guards of time“, the thoughtful and
versatile media and light artist Manfred Kielnhofer shows that since the
beginning of time mankind has had protectors, both for historic and mystical
reasons. It only seems that man himself is a potential source of danger
for his own existence. In his works of art Kielnhofer deals with and
looks into the natural human desire for feeling secure. Thus his oeuvre
reflects genuine exploration, consideration and discussion of current as
well as historic moods and sensibilities of his social environment. His
works of art captivate with elaborate combinations of light and different
materials.
Der Mensch steht im Mittelpunkt der Arbeiten
von Manfred Kielnhofer. Die Formen des menschlichen Körpers, sowohl in
Ruhe als auch in Bewegung, betrachtet der Künstler aus den
unterschiedlichsten Perspektiven und hält sie für sein Publikum fest. Die
jüngsten Arbeiten verlassen die Körperlichkeit und hinterfragen
Entstehung, Ursprung und Urknall. Durch das “Verfließen” von Farbe wird
eine Distanz zum Gegenständlichen erzeugt. Es entstehen abstrakte
Bildkompositionen, die die Urgewalt unserer Entstehungsgeschichte in
individuellen Einzelstücken sichtbar und fühlbar machen.
Jede Darstellung besitzt ihren eigenen Charakter und stellt somit ein
Einzelstück dar.
Durch die Einbeziehung des Umfeldes und der beeinflussenden Faktoren
setzt sich Kielnhofer verstärkt mit den “Raumkonzepten” auseinander. Es
gilt die Architektur zu entdecken und zu inszenieren.
Das neue Projekt "timeguards" ist
ein Resultat einer permanenten Neugestaltung der Skulptur.

Manfred Kielnhofer ist ein Multitalent, er malt, fotografiert und
betätigt sich als Bildhauer im selben Ausmaß. Vor allem die letzten drei
Jahre waren fruchtbar, er beschäftigte sich mit der Methode der
Polyesterskulptur und fand zu außergewöhnlichen Lösungen. Seine
Faltenwürfe erinnern an mittelalterliche Madonnen in neuem Gewand.
Timeguards nannte er die erste Serie, Spiritguards gesellten sich dazu.
Ob Mumie oder Pieta, der Tod scheint in allen seinen Skulpturen eine
Allgegenwärtigkeit zu sein. Beinah kontrapunktisch seine Fotografie: Akt
der stilvollen Art, als Kalender 2010 ediert, ästhetisch und dennoch
künstlerisch. Er begnügt sich nicht mit dem bloßen Akt eines Hamilton,
ihn interessiert vor allem die Spiegelung. Dazu kommt die Malerei,
überbordend auf der einen, diszipliniert auf der anderen Seite, abstrakt
das eine, gegenständlich das andere. Er scheint mit allen Stilmitteln zu
spielen und sein Publikum immer wieder verblüffen zu wollen.

He is a self-taught artist and works with many
different mediums, such as painting, film, photography, performance and
sculpture. His works of art focus on the human body with its different
shapes and movements. Being an important part of his work, the human
figure is used as a “tool”, either on a canvas or in a sculpture.
"In my art I focus on human nature". To me, the natural form
and movement of the human body is thought-provoking and a constant
challenge. The different perspectives and points of view is what I aim to
capture and display in my work, adding to it my personal touch.
SPOOKY SENTINELS

Arrayed in a semicircle, Manfred Kielnhofer’s
ghostly “time guardians” seem to have abandoned themselves to infinite
sadness. What do the life-sized polyester figures represent? Are they
bereaved women, meditating monks or nuns or premonitory spirits sent to
warn us of impending dangers? Are they supposed to inspire awe,
compassion or fear? The artist refuses to tell us why he created them and
if we dare to peer inside their cloaks we discover only black emptiness.
The garments with their many folds are vaguely
reminiscent of those sculpted by Rodin. Although the first ones
Kielnhofer molded were gray and drab, many of the newer generation
display bright colors and cheerful patterns. The artist now plans to
equip some of them with interior lighting. To emphasize their
timelessness he photographs them in front of both ancient castles and
modern high-rises, usually at night.
Manfred Kielnhofer, 41, has been operating the
gallery “Art Park” in Linz,
Austria,
since 2005. He is an abstract painter who used a naked female body as a
“canvas” for one of his best works. Under his guidance 1,500 eager
youngsters produced the largest children’s painting in the world (3,300
m²), which was displayed at many different places in Austria. Another of his
gigantic masterpieces (40,000 m²) was composed of sunflowers and other
herbs which had been planted in the middle of a field of grain near the
city of Enns.
It could be best viewed from the sky, but unfortunately the pilot
Kielnhofer hired decided to fly off on vacation before most of its
“pixels” had blossomed and the farmer had to harvest the creation before
he returned.

These Timeguards are the first in a series of
works based upon the theme of the 'time guardian.' Kielnhofer has gone on
to produce these pieces in bright and cheerful colours contradictory to
their sombre forms, an unexpected juxtaposition. The series on display at
the Cass Sculpture Foundation is part of his original treatment of this
imagery, in forms and colours meant to evoke a mystical feeling.
These forms are meant to resemble ancient creatures from another realm,
who, in ancient civilisations could have been credited with
disappearances, damnations and behavioral changes. Their eerie presence
certainly recalls the undesirable influence these forms might have
represented.
The shrouded forms pay hommage to the works of Auguste Rodin, through
their concern with character and emotion. The eerie nature of these
FIGURES derives from their vacant forms, they are at once deeply emotive
and disconcerting.
Manfred Kielnhofer was born in Haslach an der
Mühl, Austria.He currently lives and works in Linz, Austria
where he opened the gallery 'Art Park' in 2005. Kielnhofer is self-taught
and his work spans the mediums of painting, film, photography,
installation, performance and sculpture.
Kielnhofer's work is predominantly concerned
with the human figure, and its various forms and movements. The figure is
an integral part of his work, and he often uses the human form as a tool,
either in place of a canvas, or in a collaboration to produce large-scale
installations or performances.
Kielnhofer has exhibited widely throughout Austria and his work has recently been
featured in exhibitions in New York and Miami. Kielnhofer's
Timeguards represent the first of his works to be exhibited in the UK.

The most recent example that I came
across in terms of my dichotomic trajectory is figurative site
specific sculpture installations, TimeGuards/SpiritGuards by Manfred Kielnhofer. Cloaked in
concrete-like or otherwise putrid variegated cloth, Manfred Kielnhofer’s
“time guardians” form sinister groups that evokes many genres, from
fantasy to mythology and the gothic. The necromantic figures, based upon
the ancient theme of the ‘time guardian,’ depict beings from another
realm who, in ancient cultures and civilisations, would have been deemed
responsible for paranormal goings-on. The location and material of the
figures dramatically changes the connotation.

I get a
wonderful dark sense. We as people always think we count -that our faces represent
everything about who we are - we have no concept of what as come before
our own selfish life timeline or what will come after - no matter how
much we as a people, politicians or philosophers say our efforts are for
a future. I appreciated your time guards - time is continues,
relationships change and our faces are our masks - identities for society
- I appreciate that in your art faces are not there and identities become
irrelevant - chilling, beautiful and something I would love to think will
exist 200 years from now.
