Shrouded
in shining red hoods and floor-length cloaks, mysterious human-akin figures
gather conspiratorially in public plazas during evenings of community
celebration. These three metre-tall, monk-like Time Guardians convey a
sense of immortality and theological authority to protect and enforce
universal laws of existence. Created by Austrian artist Manfred Kielnhofer,
the guardians have been made in polyester resin, stone and bronze at
various sizes and with different fabric cloaks. In recent appearances at
European light festivals, some spectators have glimpsed these figures, or
just their faces, radiantly glowing (from internally installed LEDs).

anniversary of the fall of the Berlin in Germany
BERLIN, GERMANY– In celebration of the 25th
anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, there have been great
celebrations in Germany, Poland, Israel and across the globe. The demolition
of the Berlin Wall 25 years ago marked the end of oppressive rule and the
degradation of the human soul. For many people, the fall of the Berlin Wall
showed the power of human endurance and resilience.
In Berlin a symbolic wall that
served as marker for the 15 kilometer (9.4 miles) was installed where the
wall used to stand. Called the Light Border, the wall was made up of
illuminated balloons filled with helium. During the night, the almost 8,
000 white balloons were released into the night sky. Hundreds of thousands
from Germany and abroad watched as the balloons drifted across the sky to
Beethoven’s Ode to Joy conducted by Daniel Barenboim.
Besides the balloons, there were also dance party at the Brandenburg Gate,
the symbol of unity where Europe’s east-west divide once ran.
In addition to all the
celebrations, many artists also used the anniversary of the fall of the
Berlin as an opportunity to showcase their works. In the spotlight during
the celebration is the Austrian artist Manfred
Kielnhofer who
situated his phantom and mythical sculptures on walls and on buildings
across Berlin. The freelance artist who has worked as a painter, sculptor and
photographer for
many years was recently in Berlin as part of his Festival
of Light, an art project in which monk-like figures known as Guardians
of Time are
strategically located around Berlin. Since 2011, Kielnhofer has
been visiting Germany’s capital regularly to present his Guardians
of Time sculptures.
The Guardians of Time which have toured worldwide,
visiting museums and exhibitions for many years are made up of sitting and
standing mythical figures that have captivated viewers. This year, the
mythical figure who walk like monks through the world were presented in
many places across Berlin. Berliners were held in great suspense as no one
knew where they world appear next. New to this year’s Festival
of Lights were
nearly three meters tall white guards. At the Festival Centre in Potsdamer
Platz, the monks were both observer and guardians of time and space.
Glowing under red and white lights the monks stood, presenting a view into
the past and present.

The Sculptures "Guardians of
Time" are created by Manfred Kielnhofer. The Austrian artist
Kielnhofer is sure that mankind is watched and protected by strange
characters. The previous and further existence of the human race belongs to
those creatures taking care of mankind. Nobody knows where these guardians
of time come from. They suddenly appear and also disappear at once, and
sometimes they are around you but you cannot see them. They are always
taking care of you. Some may think about a religion, but it is not.
Prophets and religions come and go, but the “Guardians of Time” stay with
us, independent of time or space. Independent whether your religion, your
nationality, the colour of your skin.
The
designer and artist Manfred Kielnhofer once had a skiing accident dangerous
to life. He was bedfast for a long period and was not able to work. During
the time of rehabilitation he began to think things over. What happened to
me and who paid attention to me? Who rescued me? What is that good for? Why
did I survive? He was asking himself. And then, suddenly, the shape of the
guardians appeared in the dark, inside his brain, becoming more and more
concrete. Immediately he knew: That’s the answer. These creatures have
rescued him. They have taken care of him.
Since that time Manfred Kielnhofer
is creating these sculptures. He named them “Guardians of Time”, in German
“Waechter”. He travels around the world, showing these Sculptures and
telling people not to be afraid, but also to be careful. Because if you do
something that harms other people, you are watched by the “Guardians of
Time” and you will be called to account.
The message says that people should
never forget that they are always watched by a power that is stronger than
mankind. Just lean back and have a good time, you are always sheltered. And
stop dark doings, because you can never cheat the “Guardians of Time”.

Die Skulpturen “Wächter” sind von
Manfred Kielnhofer geschaffen worden. Der österreichische Künstler Kielnhofer
ist sich sicher, dass die Menschheit von seltsamen Wesen beobachtet und
beschützt wird. Die bisherige und zukünftige Existenz der menschlichen
Rasse geht auf die Existenz dieser Wesen zurück, welche auf die Menschen
achtgeben.
Niemand
weiß, wo diese Wächter herkommen Sie tauchen plötzlich auf wie sie ebenso
plötzlich verschwinden, und manchmal sind sie bei dir obwohl du sie gar
nicht sehen kannst.
Sie passen immer auf dich auf. Manche könnten jetzt glauben, es handle sich
um eine Religion. Aber das ist es nicht. Propheten und Religionen kommen
und gehen, doch die “Wächter” bleiben bei uns, unabhängig von Zeit und
Raum. Unabhängig von deiner Religion, deiner Nationalität, deiner
Hautfarbe.
Der Designer und Künstler Manfred
Kielnhofer hatte einmal einen lebensbedrohlichen Ski-Unfall. Eine lange
Zeit war er ans Bett gefesselt, konnte nicht arbeiten. Während der Zeit der
Rehabilitation begann er, die Dinge zu überdenken. Was ist mit mir passiert
und wer hat mich beschützt? Wer hat mich gerettet? Welchen Sinn hatte das?
Warum habe ich überlebt? Und dann, plötzlich, tauchten die Umrisse von
Gestalten in seinem Gehirn auf, wurden immer deutlicher, wurden greifbar.
Es waren die „Wächter“. Und mit einem Male wusste er: Das ist die Antwort.
Diese Figuren haben mich gerettet, sie haben mich beschützt.
Seit dieser Zeit kreiert Manfred
Kielnhofer diese Skulpturen. Er nannte sie “Wächter”, oder “Wächter der
Zeit”, auf Englisch “Guardians of Time”. Er reiste mit ihnen um die Welt
und zeigt überall diese Skulpturen. Er zeigte sie den Menschen und machte
den Leuten Mut, sich nicht zu fürchten. Doch andererseits sollte man auch
auf der Hut sein. Denn wenn Menschen etwas tun, was anderen Menschen
Schaden zufügt, dann sehen das die Wächter ebenfalls. Sie registrieren es
und ziehen die Leute, die Böses tun, zur Verantwortung.
Die Nachricht ist: Menschen sollten
nie vergessen, dass sie von einer Kraft beobachtet werden, die stärker ist
als die Menschheit. Lehne dich also zurück und genieße die Zeit, Du bist
gut beschützt. Aber weh denen, die Böses tun, denn sie werden beobachtet
und irgendwann zur Rechenschaft gezogen werden. Denn niemand kann die
„Wächter“ betrügen.

Manfred Kielnhofer was born
in Haslach an der Mühl, Austria. He currently lives and works in Linz,
Austria where he opened the gallery 'Art Park' in 2005. Kielnhofer is
self-taught and his work spans the mediums of painting, film, photography,
installation, performance and sculpture.
Kielnhofer's work is
predominantly concerned with the human figure, and its various forms and
movements. The figure is an integral part of his work, and he often uses
the human form as a tool, either in place of a canvas, or in a
collaboration to produce large-scale installations or performances.
Kielnhofer has exhibited
widely throughout Austria and his work has recently been featured in
exhibitions in New York and Miami. Kielnhofer's Timeguards represent the
first of his works to be exhibited in the UK.
Manfred
Kielnhofer's Timeguards, the Foundation's newest arrivals, cut imposing
figures in the Cass Sculpture Foundation's woodland setting. This sinister
group evokes many genres, from fantasy to mythology and the gothic, as a
result of their sombre, shrouded forms. These necromantic figures, based
upon the ancient theme of the 'time guardian,' depict beings from another
realm who, in ancient cultures and civilisations, would have been deemed
responsible for paranormal goings-on.
The human form is central to Kielnhofer's artistic
practice. He is preoccupied with the body's various forms and movements
which he appropriates through a number of mediums, from canvas to
installations and performance works. Kielnhofer's work has been exhibited
throughout his native Austria and has featured in exhibitions in New York
and Miami. Timeguards represents Kielnhofer's sculptural debut in the UK.

Vor rund zehn Jahren tauchten erstmals „Wächter der Zeit“ in Oberösterreich
auf. Heute haben die Guardians of Time
buchstäblich die ganze Welt erobert. Sowohl die physische, als auch die
virtuelle Welt. In unterschiedlichen Größen und in unterschiedlichen
Materialien: als lebensgroßes Tuchobjekt gehärtet mit Polyesterharz, als
Silberminiatur oder als handliche Plastik aus Kunststoff, die bereits viele
Fotografen auf ihren Weltreisen begleitet hat. Ein wachsender Fanclub
postet eigene Fotos mit den Guardians aus allen
Teilen der Welt auf facebook und Co.
Kielnhofer,
der als Fotograf, Designer und Bildhauer tätig ist, hat mit den Time Guards
sein persönliches Gesamtkunstwerk geschaffen. Die Inszenierung der Figuren
bei großen Events wie beim Festival of Lights in Berlin ist für den
Künstler genauso wichtig wie die technische Perfektion der einzelnen
Skulpturen. Die neuesten Serien in Bronze waren in diesem Jahr bereits auf
den Wiener Kunst & Antiquitätenmessen im Künstlerhaus und in der
Hofburg, sowie auf der Art & Antique in der Residenz Salzburg zu sehen.
Für eine
gelungene Schlagzeile setzt Kielnhofer auch mal auf Guerillataktik. So war
er mit seinen lebensgroßen Wächtern schon auf der Biennale in Venedig, der
Art Basel und zuletzt auf der documenta in Kassel – meistens ohne
Einladung. Die Werbebranche kennt den Begriff „Guerilla Marketing“. Wie man
sieht, hat Kielnhofer mit seinen Skulpturen und seinen Aktionen den Puls
der Zeit erkannt.

um Wächter: „Fünf Figuren waren wohl zu viel“ / Documenta Stadt Kassel
Kassel.
Manfred Kielnhofers (45) Skulpturen in rot leuchtenden Kutten waren ein
Hingucker im Occupy-Camp vor dem Fridericianum. Nun mussten die „Wächter
der Zeit“ weichen und stehen auf einem Balkon in der Landgraf-Karl-Straße.
Während die
Occupy-Aktivisten behaupten, die documenta-Geschäftsführung habe sie
aufgefordert, die Skulpturen zu entfernen, verneint dies die Pressestelle
der d13. Wir wollten von dem Künstler wissen, was er im fernen Österreich
von dem Vorgang mitbekommen hat.
Warum mussten die Skulpturen
verschwinden?
Manfred Kielnhofer:
Dazu gab es von Seiten der documenta keine Rückmeldung an mich. Ich wurde
nur von den Occupy-Aktivisten, die sich um die Kunstwerke kümmern,
informiert, dass documenta-Mitarbeiter sie aufgefordert hätten, die Skulpturen
wegzuräumen. Ich denke, dass es eine Aktion gab, bei der Kunstwerke
entfernt wurden, die keine documenta-Kunstwerke sind. Weil ich erst nur
eine Figur vor dem Fridericianum aufgestellt hatte, war dies wohl zunächst
nicht störend. Es wurde als Dekoration des Camps geduldet. Als es fünf
Figuren wurden, war es wohl ein bisschen zu viel.
Ärgert sie das?
Kielnhofer: Nein, das
ist okay. Nur für die Occupy-Aktion finde ich es schade. Mir gefallen die
Ziele von Occupy. Bei einer ähnlichen Aktion hatte ich die Wächter vor dem
Reichstag in Berlin aufgestellt - übrigens auch ohne Erlaubnis. Auch dies
wurde geduldet. Es dauert auch einfach zu lange, auf eine offizielle
Genehmigung zu warten.
Was passiert nun mit
den Kasseler Skulpturen?
Kielnhofer:
Vorerst bleiben die Skulpturen bei dem Aktivisten. Aber wir werden sie noch
öfter aufstellen, zum Beispiel bei einer Demo gegen die Kasseler
Rüstungsindustrie am 31. August. (bal)

Kielnhofer‘s ‘The Guardians of Time’ are an illegal installation
currently on show at Documenta
13 in Kassel, Germany. The sculpture was installed on
Friedrichsplatz in the ‘Occupy Kassel’ camp after curators rejected the
artists wish to have it included in the exhibition – which includes over
300 exhibitions by artists from all over the World. The Guardians will be
on site until the end of the art festival which concludes on 16th September
2012 and will spend their time travelling around the vast Documenta area,
popping up at the numerous venues spread across the city.

Die Wächter der Zeit von Manfred Kielnhofer sind seit dem ersten Tag am
Friedrichsplatz ausgestellt und wurden von der Documentaleiterin Carolyn
Christov-Barkargiev akzeptiert und werden die gesamten 100 Tage in der
Organisation der Occupy Kassel verbleiben.
OCCUPY
Sind Kunstausstellungen politische Orte? Zumindest Vertreter der
Occupy-Bewegung scheinen die Umgebung zeitgenössischer Großausstellungen
als geeignete Aktionsräume zu schätzen. Waren sie bei der kürzlich zu Ende
gehenden 7. Berlin Biennale sogar als offizielle Teilnehmer eingeladen,
haben sich die Aktivisten inzwischen auch auf dem Friedrichsplatz
eingefunden. In einer nächtlichen Aktion bauten die Protestler von Occupy
hier eine Zelt-Installation auf. Weiße Planen, bedruckt mit den Leitwörtern
der Kapitalismus-Kritiker: Gier, Hochmut, Neid, Geiz. Wie bekannt gab es ja
im Vorfeld Streit um die Benutzung des Platzes und seines Umraums im Rahmen
der Documenta (13): Carolyn Christoph-Barkargiev beanspruchte ihn als
gewissermaßen als Hoheitsgebiet der Großausstellung. Im Falle der
Occupy-Bewegung zeigte sie sich jedoch verständnisvoll und großzügig und
erlaubte auch dem Künstler Manfred Kielnhofer, seine rot verschleierten
"Wächter der Zeit" aufzustellen:

Police Arrest Suspicous Sculptures

Jailed, You Can Help, Photos Needed!
If you think police
just harass photographers for looking suspicious, consider the fate of the
“Madonna and sisters.” These four sculptures were arrested and thrown into jail
by Italian police in the city of Venice. They were created by the artist
Manfred Kleinhofer and were set-up during the Art Biennale exhibition. The
figures travelled around Venice by gondola and were finally placed at the
water's edge at St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco). This is the heart of
the floating city and, it seems, the authorities were worried that this was
suspicious behavior. The figures are called by their creator
"Guardians of Time" so they could hardly be seen as being on the
side of the bad guys. After the arrest, an email was sent to attempt to get
some help to free the sculptures from their captivity.
It read:
Please help:
The Guardians of Time (the Madonna and sisters
were arrested by police at the St. Mark's
Square in Venice and taken into custody. Has
anyone observed, photographed or filmed the seizure of the
four life-sized red sculptures of the Guard Time on
Wednesday afternoon August 31st, 2011?
We ask your assistance
by sending photos of the arrest.
The red giant sculptures were carried away by four
policemen to the nearby police station on Piazza
San Marco.

I am passing this
information on to PIXIQ viewers with the hope that someone who was there or
who knows someone who was there, saw and photographed this Art injustice
and can help. Especially, if you have videos of the four policemen hauling
the Madonna and sisters off to a dark jail cell somewhere in the depths of
this half-submerged town, you can
make a difference.
Venice, by the way, has
a nasty and long history of political intrigue, assassinations and summary
executions. Not a good omen for the Madonna and the sisters. Luckily these
sculptures have built in lights, so at least they will have some
illumination in their cells during their incarceration.

“Guards of Time” relates to the idea that since the beginning of time mankind
has had protectors, both for historic and mystical reasons. It seems that
only man himself is a potential source of danger for his own existence. In

Manfred Kielnhofer
ist ein vielseitiger Künstler, er fotografiert und betätigt sich als Bildhauer
im selben Ausmaß. Vor allem die letzten drei Jahre waren fruchtbar, er
beschäftigte sich mit der Methode der Polyesterskulptur und fand zu
außergewöhnlichen Lösungen. Seine Faltenwürfe erinnern an mittelalterliche
Madonnen in neuem Gewand. Timeguards nannte er die erste Serie,
Spiritguards gesellten sich dazu. Ob Mumie oder Pieta, der Tod scheint in
allen seinen Skulpturen eine Allgegenwärtigkeit zu sein. Beinah
kontrapunktisch seine Fotografie: Akt der stilvollen Art, als Kalender 2010
ediert, ästhetisch und dennoch künstlerisch. Er begnügt sich nicht mit dem
bloßen Akt eines Hamilton, ihn interessiert vor allem die Spiegelung. Dazu
kommt die Malerei, überbordend auf der einen, diszipliniert auf der anderen
Seite, abstrakt das eine, gegenständlich das andere. Er scheint mit allen
Stilmitteln zu spielen und sein Publikum immer wieder verblüffen zu wollen.

Der umsichtige und vielseitige Medien- und Lichtkünstler Manfred Kielnhofer
bestätigt mit seinen zeitlosen Installationen „Die Wächter der Zeit“, dass
die Menschheit seit jeher aus historischen und mystischen Gründen
Beschützer hat. Nur sind die Menschen manchmal die größte Gefahr für sich.
Kielnhofer fasst dieses Vorlangen nach Geborgenheit in jeder Phase gut auf
und zeigt durch seine Werke sehr viel Verständnis für die aktuellen, wie

The Time Guards.
With his timeless installations “guards of time“, the thoughtful and
versatile media and light artist Manfred Kielnhofer shows that since the
beginning of time mankind has had protectors, both for historic and
mystical reasons. It only seems that man himself is a potential source of
danger for his own existence. In his works of art Kielnhofer deals with and

The
grim seeker after truth
Anyone wondering why these grim reaper style figures were seated on this
white van - look no further than the latest installation from artist
Manfred Kielnhofer. He is from Haslach an der
Mühl, in the district of Rohrbach in Upper Austria, Austria, and is an artist and
designer whose work usually centres around the human anatomy. His recent
piece of art is the Ghost Car, which is a product of the developing ‘Light
Guards’ project. This project surfaced from the theory that humankind has
always been able to boast having guardians in different ways, in potential
danger from only themselves. This idea intrigued the artist Kielnhofer, who
approached it with his artwork, intertwining the theme of longing for
security harboured by all humans. The Ghost Car portrays a sizely white van
driving, seating sheet-covered figures. Perhaps this reflects
individuality, exploration and recognition of current events in society, as
it seems to interpret the theme by suggesting the hooded figures are
looking to the drapes and car for protection as they are possibly ghosts,
who are afraid of the life after death, and long for safekeeping.

Der Bildhauer, Maler und Fotograf Manfred Kielnhofer hat die vier Baseler
Fähren oder Fährstege mit seinen Wächtern der Zeit bestückt. Auf der
Münsterfähre steht eine solche Plastik auf dem Dach. Nachts ist sie
beleuchtet. Am Klingental-Fährsteg vor der Kaserne sitzt ein Wächter in
Weiss. Ich bereise Europa und stelle die Wächter als Mahnmale an Orten auf,
wo bedeutende Ereignisse bevorstehen, sagt Kielnhofer. So standen seine
Plastiken beispielsweise schon vor dem Brandenburger Tor in Berlin oder
aktuell an der Documenta in Kassel. Die Wächter sollen beim Betrachter
einen starken Eindruck hinterlassen und einen starken Eindruck hinterlassen,
sagt der 45 -jährige Künstler. Er wolle mit seinen Figuren auch auf die
Totenwelt hinweisen, mit der sich die Menschen nicht so gerne
auseinandersetzen. In der griechischen Mythologie stellt der Fluss Styx die
Grenze zwischen der Welt der Lebenden und dem Totenreich Hades dar. Der
Fährmann bringt die Leute über den Fluss. Im übertragenen Sinn hat er somit
auch etwas mit dem Tod zu tun, sagt Kielnhofer. Der Faltenwurf der Wächter
der Zeit könnten an mittelalterliche Madonnen in
neuem Gewand erinnern. Kielnhofer stellt es aber dem Betrachter überlassen,
was er mit dem Anblick mache. Wer Katholisch erzogen ist, sieht wohl anders
darin als Muslime oder Kinder, sagt Kielnhofer.

The “Glowing Light Ball Bench” created by Manfred
Kielnhofer was present at the Light Art Biennial Austria. The
bench, which has a very simple design, consists of three light balls and
two wooden board perforates that lay over the
light balls. Contrasting structural dynamics of the artist Manfred
Kielnhofer provides analytically with his artistic work The "Glowing Light
Ball Bench" more than one possible answer to this issue. Kielnhofer
asks the viewer literally to an intellectual debate and intellectual,
philosophical stimulation. Based on art and design relavante aspects of this work is based on philosophical thinking
patterns that are complementary with social impact through the application
and interaction. Materials and urban positioning, more
variables which give the work of art this unique versatility and
applicability. Whether moving, static, bright, swimming, driving, busy or isolated freestanding - the action itself
defines the fine line to use artistic design, or art-oriented design to

Kielnhofer – Licht-, Sitz- oder Kunstobjekt?
Leuchtmöbel gibt es mittlerweile schon zu Hauf für den Innen- wie
Aussenbereich, doch was passiert wenn sich ein Künstler wie das
österreichische Multitalent Manfred Kielnhofer heranmacht die Grenzen
zwischen Design und Kunst zu vermischen?
Manfred Kielnhofer ist ein künstlerischer Provokateur mit einem Schmunzeln
– sein Interlux Sessel der in der artpark Galerie in Linz zu bewundern ist,
verwirrt er den Betrachter gekonnt und eigenwillig zugleich: Ist das nun
eine beleuchtete Skulptur? Oder ein Möbel
der Galerie? Manfred Kielhofer läßt die Antwort offen und formuliert es
lieber mit den Worten: “Get two features in one”. Wer sitzen will –
darf sitzen, wer betrachten will, soll betrachten. Der klare Aufbau aus
industriellen Plexiglassrohren wie Scheiben läßt auf ein Nutzmöbel
schließen, doch die wuchtige wie den Raum dominierende Form verwischen die
Grenzen zum Möbel und die auswechselbaren Leuchtmittel geben Anlass auf

Möbel aus Papier
Selbst der kleine Post-it-Zettel war einmal Teil eines Baums. Doch in
seiner üblichen Verwendung denken wir meist nicht an die Herkunft des
Papiers. Aber saßen Sie schon einmal auf einem Stuhl komplett aus Pappe?
Wie stabil Papier
sein kann, zeigen die Papp-Möbel des österreichischen Künstlers Manfred
Kielnhofer. In der Galerie Artpark in Linz stehen Kielnhofers
umweltfreundliche Sessel und Stühle bereits seit mehreren Jahren ohne dass
man es ihnen ansehen könnte. Gefertigt aus recyceltem Zeitungspapier sind
sie ebenso stabil wie herkömmliche Möbel aus Metall, Holz oder Kunststoff.
Das außergewöhnliche Design aus Papprohren macht sie jedoch zu mehr als
einem einfachen Sitzmöbel. Der freischaffende Künstler Manfred Kielnhofer
gründete 2005 den Linzer Artpark und initiierte seither mehrere
Ausstellungen. Auch viele seiner eigenen Kunstwerke sind in der Galerie
Artpark zu sehen.
